Local residents have demolished the home of Jamaat leader Taijul Islam, who had been relieved of his duties over allegations of involvement in immoral activities, in Pashchim Charkamarkandi village of Nilkhi Union in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur. On Sunday morning (November 1), several hundred men and women gathered and tore down his house.

Many were seen standing with banners demanding punishment. However, the extent of damage to the house was not immediately known.

The accused, Taijul Islam, is a leader of the union Jamaat. He had practised kabiraji (traditional) treatment in the area for a long time. Since the period after August 5, 2024, he had been in charge of Jamaat's publicity work in the union. Local people knew him as the president (amir) of Nilkhi Union Jamaat.

On October 25, an objectionable video involving him spread on social media, creating criticism and anger in the area. Local residents alleged that such activities were bringing dishonour to the village.

Earlier, on October 27, a press release from the Shibchar upazila branch of Bangladesh Jamaat announced that Taijul Islam had been relieved of all organisational activities of the Nilkhi Union branch. The release mentioned that allegations of morality-related activities against him had been published on social media. It also said further steps would be taken under organisational rules if the allegations were proven.

Meanwhile, Taijul Islam claimed in a post on his personal Facebook account that the woman in the video circulating on social media was his wife.

Shibchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain said, 'In the morning, I learned that local people held a human chain demanding punishment for the accused Taijul Islam. Later, some people vandalised the house. On receiving the news, police visited the scene. Necessary action will be taken in this regard.'
