Silva's late goal denies Bayern as Dortmund snatch Klassiker draw to tighten Bundesliga race

Borussia Dortmund snatched a 2-2 draw with a late goal to deny Bayern Munich victory. Portuguese striker Fabio Silva, who came on as a substitute, scored in the 89th minute as the two sides shared the points. The meeting between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund is known as the 'German Klassiker', and in this Klassiker the last laugh belonged to Dortmund despite not winning — they left the field with a draw after falling behind twice.
In the Bundesliga eighth-round match at the Allianz Arena on Saturday night (31 October), hosts Bayern led through goals from Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano. Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva equalised for Dortmund. One of the most talked-about moments of the match was Harry Kane's missed penalty.
Dortmund had a scoring chance right at the start of the match. Jobe Bellingham's shot found the net but was ruled out with the help of VAR. The referee took the decision over Carney Chukwuemeka's foul on goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Before that, in the tenth minute, Michael Olise's shot hit the post and came back.
Laimer put Bayern ahead in the 38th minute. His first shot from Olise's pass was saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but the Austrian midfielder made no mistake with the rebound. The hosts went into the break leading 1-0.
Bayern had a golden chance to extend the lead in the second half. They won a penalty in the 56th minute, but Harry Kane's spot-kick hit the crossbar and came back. Dortmund wasted no time using that let-off. In the 60th minute, Guirassy equalised with a low shot from Carney Chukwuemeka's pass.
Bayern went ahead again within four minutes, however. In the 66th minute, Upamecano received the ball from Kane's header and sent it into the net from close range. Kane then came close again in the 75th minute, but his shot hit the post.
Dortmund grew desperate for an equaliser late on. In the 89th minute, from an attack built from a corner, Bayern's defence could not fully clear the ball. Substitute Fabio Silva took the chance, beating Urbig with an angled shot to make it 2-2.
Bayern had a chance to win even in added time. Lennart Karl's long-range shot hit the crossbar and came back. With no further goals, the two teams left the field sharing the points.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was not with the team because of illness. In his absence, assistant Aaron Danks took charge in the dugout. Bayern were forced to take off Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry because of injuries during the match. Michael Olise also had an injury problem.
Even after this draw, Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga ahead on goal difference. Both teams have 18 points from eight matches, but the Munich side have held on to the number one spot by being ahead on goal difference.
