The Islamic University (IU) unit of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has demanded the installation of solar panels across the university campus as an alternative to frequent load-shedding. The student organisation submitted a memorandum to the university administration pressing for an uninterrupted power supply.

The leaders handed the memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A K M Motinur Rahman at noon on Saturday (31 October).

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Emtaz Hossain, Treasurer Professor Dr Md Idris Ali and Zia Parishad president Professor Dr Md Farukuzzaman Khan were present when the memorandum was submitted.

The Chhatra Dal delegation was led by unit convener Masud Rumi Mithun, member-secretary Rafiz Ahmed and senior joint convener Anwar Parvez, along with other leaders of the organisation.

The memorandum said the recent power crisis and frequent load-shedding have been severely disrupting the university's administrative work, teaching, examinations and research. It also said the daily lives of students living in the residential halls are being disrupted for the same reason.

To keep academic and administrative activities running in this situation, installing solar panels on all administrative and academic buildings, including the residential halls, is now a demand of the time, the leaders said in the memorandum.

The leaders also said the government has already taken an initiative to install solar panels at various government institutions to tackle the power shortage. If the same initiative is implemented at the Islamic University, the university will develop its own solar power generation capacity.

According to the memorandum, installing solar panels would reduce dependence on conventional electricity and lower costs, cut load-shedding, and allow the university to play a role in protecting the environment.
