Share Market Falls Again on First Working Day of Week, DSEX Drops 32 Points
The downward trend in share prices continued on the country's capital market. On Sunday, the first working day of the week, all the main indices of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) fell as most listed companies lost value.
Alongside the fall in indices, daily turnover on the DSE also shrank. With this, the DSE has now fallen on five of the last six working days, and the CSE on four working days.
Indices moved slightly upward in the first half hour of trading as buyers were active, but the gain did not last. After the first 30 minutes, heavy selling pressure set in and company after company moved from the gainers' list to the losers' list. Selling intensified towards the end of the session and the day closed with a big fall.
At the end of the day, prices of 151 issues rose on the DSE, while 190 declined and 46 remained unchanged.
Among the regularly dividend-paying 'A' category companies, 94 rose, 90 fell and 10 stayed unchanged. Among mid-quality companies, 29 rose against 36 that fell. In the 'Z' group of companies that have failed to pay dividends, 28 rose, 63 fell and 32 remained unchanged.
The mutual fund sector, however, showed the opposite picture: prices of 30 funds rose while only one declined.
As most issues lost value, the DSE's main index, DSEX, dropped 32 points from the previous working day to stand at 5,385 points. The DS30 index of top 30 companies lost 18 points to 2,068, and the Shariah-based DSES index fell 4 points to 1,045.
Overall turnover on the DSE fell to Tk 482.19 crore, which is Tk 82.43 crore less than the previous working day's Tk 564.62 crore.
Matin Spinning topped the turnover chart on the DSE with shares worth Tk 17.45 crore changing hands. Saiham Textile was second with Tk 14.20 crore and Evince Textile third with Tk 14.19 crore.
The turnover leaders' list also included Brac Bank, City Bank, Sonali Aansh, Desh General Insurance, Nahi Aluminium, Fine Foods and Envoy Textile.
On the Chittagong Stock Exchange, out of 180 securities traded, 75 rose, 84 fell and 21 remained unchanged. Its overall index, CASPI, fell 82 points, although turnover there rose slightly to Tk 20.63 crore.
