Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested two men with 32 gold bars worth Tk 7 crore 35 lakh in Mujibnagar, Meherpur. Acting on a tip-off, members of the BGB's Nazirakona camp seized the bars and detained the pair on Sunday (November 1) at noon as they were attempting to smuggle the gold across the border.
The 32 seized gold bars weigh an estimated 4 kilograms in total. The operation was carried out by BGB-6 at the Nazirakona border area in Mujibnagar, under the BGB's Chuadanga battalion.
The two detainees are Asadul Islam (50), son of Abu Bakkar of Sonapur village under Mujibnagar police station, and Jewel Hossain (30), son of Madar of the same village.
According to BGB sources, the force received a tip-off that two men were attempting to smuggle gold near international boundary pillar 110. At around 1pm on Sunday, an operation was conducted under the leadership of Nazirakona BOP camp commander Habildar Shamimur Rahman. Keeping watch from a tactical position, BGB members spotted the two men heading towards the border and ordered them to stop. When the men dropped their bag and tried to flee, the BGB members caught them. The bag contained 32 gold bars.
Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of 6 BGB, said the detainees had been handed over to Mujibnagar police station after a case was filed, and the seized gold would be deposited at the treasury branch.
