Elderly Man Dies in Bee Swarm Attack in Kurigram's Rowmari, Woman in Hospital
An elderly man named Khalil Ullah (65) has died from bee stings in Rowmari upazila of Kurigram, and another elderly woman, Morzina Khatun (60), was seriously injured in the same incident. The incident took place at around 10am on Saturday (November 1) in Notun Shaulmari village of Shaulmari union in the upazila. The deceased, Khalil Ullah, was the son of the late Jamat Ullah of the same village.
According to local residents and relatives of the deceased, Khalil Ullah was weeding an eggplant field beside his house on Saturday morning. At that time, a hawk attacked a beehive on a nearby tree, enraging the swarm. The bees attacked in a group — Khalil Ullah, who was working in the field, and Morzina Khatun, who was sitting in the yard of a neighbouring house. Stung on the eyes, nose, mouth and other parts of their bodies, both collapsed to the ground in severe pain.
Hearing their screams, local people rushed to the spot, rescued the two in critical condition and took them to Rowmari Upazila Health Complex. While under treatment there, Khalil Ullah's condition deteriorated further, and he died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was being taken for advanced treatment.
The injured Morzina Khatun remains under treatment at Rowmari Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Nobiul Islam, the duty doctor at the upazila health complex, said the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly due to anaphylaxis — a severe allergic reaction — caused by the bee stings. That is why the patient could not survive, and he had learned that the man died on the way.
