Local residents staged a protest and human chain at the Saghatta upazila parishad premises in Gaibandha on Sunday (November 1) at noon, demanding the removal of Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ratan Kumar Dutta. The programme was held over allegations of harassment faced by people seeking land services.

More than a hundred affected people and local citizens took part in the programme. They raised various allegations against the official and demanded his removal.

Alamgir Hossain, Md Hamidur Rahman Bipu, Sujan Mondal, Javed Mia, Shah Alam Mondal and others addressed the human chain.

The speakers alleged that ordinary people who come for land services are harassed without reason and made to suffer in the name of mobile court drives. They said land service is a right of the people, yet service seekers are suffering because of irregularities and harassment.

The speakers also alleged that the official holds sympathetic views toward the banned Awami League. They said it is essential to ensure neutrality, transparency and people-friendly conduct from officials while on duty at government offices.

From the human chain, demands were raised to investigate the allegations, take necessary action and remove the official immediately. The speakers also sought the intervention of higher authorities to improve service quality at the land office and end harassment of the public.

Asked about the matter, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ratan Kumar Dutta said his office is free of brokers. He also claimed that all allegations brought against him are baseless.
