Carnival Cruise Line has begun a pilot program that places stickers on guests' cruise cards to identify those who have prepaid their gratuities. The move has drawn mixed reactions from passengers — some welcome it as recognition, while others say how they tip should not be put on public display.

On 28 October, a TikTok user shared a video from her recent sailing aboard the Carnival Panorama showing a new sticker on her Carnival Cruise Line card that read, "Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities."

The passenger also showed a note left in her stateroom thanking her for prepaying gratuities. The note said her support was greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make a cruise vacation fun, memorable and enjoyable. It added: "Thank you for choosing Carnival, and we trust that you're having a wonderful cruise filled with fun, relaxation and unforgettable moments!"

In a statement shared with Fox News Digital, Carnival Cruise Line said: "The Carnival gratuity program is an important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible."

The company went on: "Our team members provide great service to every guest. The 'Crew Love' stickers and thank-you notes are simply a way to let our crew know that a guest has prepaid their gratuities, while giving those guests a little recognition for their generosity." Carnival said this is one component of a broader pilot, and that it is listening to feedback as it evaluates it.

Not all passengers are pleased, however. One TikTok user commented: "I prepay my gratuities, but I feel it's my business, not everyone else's. I don't like this at all. People shouldn't be shamed if they can't afford to prepay."

Another user wrote that her servers and stewards love the cash she gives them since it goes right into their pockets. Opinions ran the other way too — one user wrote, "I've always noticed you get better service if you tip upfront," and another said she always prepays her gratuities and tips about $250 to $300 extra on top, calling the sticker news the best she had heard all day.

A Reddit thread also discussed the new program. One user called it "so incredibly tacky," saying it appeared not just as a sticker but as a screen in the app, so likely servers and others a guest interacts with see it too, and asked what Carnival was thinking. Another called the sticker idea "super cringy" and asked why tipping needs to be made a public thing.

Yet another Reddit user wrote that he usually prepays a week beforehand just so it is done, with no surprises, but does not need or want a sticker for it like a kindergartner being told "Good job!"

The controversy is one of several recent disputes over cruise costs and fees. Earlier this year, Fox News Digital reported that cruise passengers were growing frustrated as several major cruise lines raised daily gratuities and added service charges. Also this year, passengers pushed back against Carnival Cruise Line's plans to introduce dynamic pricing for drink and Wi-Fi packages.
