Arsenal win at Anfield for the first time in 14 years as Havertz goal sends the Gunners top
Arsenal took full advantage of Manchester City's defeat to Brighton, beating Liverpool 1-0 to move three points clear at the top of the English Premier League for the reigning champions.
City's loss to Brighton on Saturday opened the door for Arsenal to take top spot, but the statistics were against them: the Gunners' last league win at Anfield had come in 2012. Mikel Arteta's side broke that cycle, winning at Liverpool's ground for the first time in 14 years for the north London club.
The only goal of the match came in the 16th minute, when Kai Havertz turned Declan Rice's low cross in at the back post in front of goal.
With the goal, Havertz moved past Ilkay Gundogan to become the record German goalscorer in Premier League history. It was his third goal in an Arsenal shirt this season.
From then on Arsenal struggled to hold back wave after wave of Liverpool attacks. The hosts were desperate to equalise for the rest of the first half and kept their dominance early in the second half too, but Arsenal tightened up their defence enough that Liverpool could not create many more clear chances.
After Myles Lewis-Skelly came on, Arsenal tried to regain momentum, but Alisson saved a shot from Christos Tzolis with one hand to keep the score from becoming 2-0.
In the end Havertz's goal was enough for Arsenal's three points. Arsenal have 24 points from 9 matches, with City second on 21. The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth, nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
