New rule for motorcycle front plates: registration number may now be written in a single line

Staff Reporter

The government has changed the rules for displaying front number plates on motorcycles. From now on, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) may allow the registration number to be written in a single line on the front of a motorcycle. The authority may also permit number plates of more than one size, depending on the motorcycle's design.

A notification in this regard was published in the Bangladesh Gazette on Sunday (November 1). It was issued on October 28 from the BRTA establishment branch of the Road Transport and Highways Division, and was signed, by order of the President, by Deputy Secretary Al-Amin Md Nurul Islam.

The notification says Rule 36 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022 has been amended under the powers given by Section 122 of the Road Transport Act, 2018.

Under the amended rules, alongside the previously prescribed method, the authority may permit the registration number on the front of a motorcycle to be written on a single horizontal line.

The BRTA may also allow the front registration mark to be displayed on retro-reflective plates of multiple sizes (length and width), according to the motorcycle's design.

The new rules also empower the authority to determine the height of the plate's letters, the dimensions of the letters indicating the district or region name, the height of letters indicating the vehicle class, the blank space at the top of the plate, the gap between two digits, and the length of hyphens between digits on the second line.

Where the registration number is written in one line, provision has been kept for using a hyphen of a prescribed length after the letters indicating the district or region name and the vehicle class.

The notification further says the words 'motorcycle and' have been removed from sub-rule (10) of Rule 36 of the Road Transport Rules. The amended rules take effect immediately.
