Power cut to 10 dyeing and washing factories in South Keraniganj, operations shut

In a drive by the Department of Environment in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, the electricity connections of 10 dyeing and washing factories have been disconnected and their operations shut down. The connections were cut because the factories had no environmental clearance, had taken connections illegally, and had no effluent treatment plant (ETP).
The drive was carried out on Monday in the Aganagar area on Haji Abdul Barek Road. Action was taken against the factories through a mobile court run jointly by the department's Dhaka district office and the Monitoring and Enforcement branch of its headquarters.
The factories shut down are Sanju Dyeing & Washing, Salmun Washing, Saima Washing, Rob Washing, Unique Washing, Nur Dyeing-1, Nur Dyeing-2, Nur Dyeing-3, Bismillah Wash and Rima Washing.
The drive was led by the Department of Environment's executive magistrate Sadia Akter. Inspector Md Habibur Rahman of the Dhaka district office served as prosecutor.
Mahbub Jamil, director of the department's Monitoring and Enforcement wing, and deputy director Md Syed Ahmed Kabir were present and gave overall direction. Md Elias Mahmud, deputy director of the Dhaka district office, was also present.
The Navy, naval police, Coast Guard and Keraniganj police station provided the necessary legal support in conducting the mobile court.
The Department of Environment said such mobile courts and drives will continue in future to protect the environment.
