Akhteruzzaman's Bail Stands in Appellate Division Too, 'No Order' on State Plea

Staff Reporter

The Appellate Division's chamber court has upheld the High Court bail granted to former MP and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman. On Monday (November 2), the chamber court of Justice Md. Rezaul Haque passed a 'no order' on the state's application seeking a stay of the bail.

Earlier, on Sunday (November 1), a High Court bench of Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Md. Zakir Hossen had granted Akhteruzzaman bail.

Before that, on October 26, Judge Md. Sadekin Habib Bappi of Dhaka's Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 had rejected his bail petition.

On the afternoon of October 2, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Akhteruzzaman from his home in the Cantonment DOHS area of the capital.

The next day the court granted one day of remand for questioning. After the remand ended, on October 4 his bail petition was rejected and he was ordered to be sent to jail.

According to the case allegations, on October 1 tensions flared at the airport over mismanagement, a shortage of luggage trolleys, delays in receiving luggage and passengers not getting Zamzam water; at one stage it escalated into threats and intimidation.

A case was later filed against Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman on charges of creating disorder at the airport, obstructing government work and harassing a security officer.

With the chamber court's 'no order', the High Court's bail order remains in force.
