Leaders and activists of the Jagannath University unit of Chhatra Dal beat a former student of the university and handed him to police, alleging his involvement with the banned student organisation Chhatra League.

The beaten student is named Joynal Abedin. He was a student of the university's pharmacy department in the 2016-17 academic session.

Speaking to police, students and eyewitnesses and based on video footage of the incident, it was learned that Joynal came to campus on Monday afternoon to watch the university's founding anniversary programme. Soon after he arrived, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists chased and caught him.

University unit Chhatra Dal senior joint convener Jafar Ahmed, joint convener Mostafizur Rahman Rumi and Suman Sardar, along with other leaders and activists, were present at the time.

Joynal was taken from the campus Kathaltola area into the neighbouring Pogose Laboratory School. He was beaten there and then handed to police by the Chhatra Dal leaders and activists.

Before being handed to police, Joynal was heard telling the Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, in anguish, to kill him there. He also said, 'They have caught me unfairly. If I am in any posted material of Chhatra League, then judge me as you wish.'

After handing Joynal to police, Jagannath University Chhatra Dal joint convener Mostafizur Rahman said, 'When we went to Kathaltola on campus, we saw Chhatra League terrorists carrying out various activities to spoil the programme. From there we, the leaders and activists of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal, caught one person and handed him to police.'

University unit Chhatra Dal senior joint convener Jafar Ahmed said, 'We saw him at Kathaltola. He was questioned then, but he admitted nothing. Later we took him out through the Pogose School gate to Shankharibazar intersection, where we saw police. There we handed him to police. We asked police to check the mobile phone he had with him.'

Kotwali police station officer-in-charge (OC) Rabiul Islam said, 'Chhatra Dal leaders and activists handed him to us. We are verifying... action will be taken after confirming whether he has Chhatra League involvement. His village home is in Kishoreganj district; we are contacting the local police station. Work on his involvement is under way.'

Earlier, last Sunday, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists detained a former leader of the Dhaka University unit Chhatra League from Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University and handed him to Shahbagh police station.
