A 19-year-old woman, Lamia Brishti, has been killed with her throat slit in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur, and her husband Rabiul Chhaiyal stands accused of the murder. The incident took place at around 8pm on Monday (November 2) in Kaneshwar village of Kaneshwar union in the upazila. Police have arrested the accused husband after the incident.

Police and local sources said Lamia and Rabiul had married six years ago after a romantic relationship. Rabiul is alleged to have been involved in drug use and drug dealing since the marriage. The couple quarrelled frequently over this.

A week ago, Lamia told Rabiul to give up using and selling drugs. Saying she would divorce him otherwise, she left for her father's home.

Local people said that on Monday Lamia was called back to her husband's home on the pretext of settling the family dispute. The matter was then settled through a local arbitration. After everyone had left following the arbitration, Rabiul argued with Lamia again.

It is alleged that at one point Rabiul took Lamia to a pond beside a neighbouring house, slit her throat with a sharp weapon, dumped her in the pond and fled. Later, Lamia's younger brother Obaidul Madbar went looking for her and found her lying in the pond. She was rescued from there but died on the way to hospital.

The victim's mother, Shahida Akter, said Rabiul had been involved in drug use and selling since the marriage. He often beat her daughter for protesting against it. A general diary (GD) had also been filed at the police station over this, she said.

Shahida Akter said her daughter had been called back on the pretext of settling the family dispute. But shortly afterwards she received news that her daughter had been murdered with her throat slit. She demanded proper justice for the killing.

Damudya Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Jahangir Alam said the accused Rabiul was arrested by tracking his mobile phone after the incident. The matter is under investigation and legal action will be taken on the basis of the complaint.
