Police in Durgapur, Netrokona, have arrested a suspect named Badiuzzaman, also known as Badi (40), in a case filed over an abduction followed by a ransom demand. After the arrest, police found that he is an accused in at least 19 cases, including murder and abduction.

Badiuzzaman was arrested at around 9:30pm on Monday (November 2) from the Menkifanda area of Durgapur Sadar upazila. Durgapur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Khandaker Shaker Ahmed confirmed the arrest.

According to police and the case statement, Shafiqul Islam (35) was returning home from Shibganj Bazar at around 10pm on August 24 when a group of men blocked his way in a pre-planned attack.

He was then forcibly detained, his mouth covered with cloth, and taken on a motorcycle to an unknown place in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh. There, the abductors demanded five lakh taka in ransom from his family, and threatened to kill him if the money was not paid, the case statement says.

Shafiqul Islam was later taken to the Ransinghpur Bazar area of Dhobaura upazila. Sensing police activity, the abductors left him there and fled. Police later rescued him and took him to Durgapur police station.

On August 25, Shafiqul's brother Faruk Ahmed (48) filed a case with Durgapur police station over the incident, naming eight people and accusing another seven to eight unidentified people.

Police said Badiuzzaman was arrested as a suspect in that case, and that records show at least 19 cases against him, including murder and abduction cases.

Durgapur OC Khandaker Shaker Ahmed said: “As soon as we received news of the abduction, police were sent and Shafiqul Islam was rescued. His brother then filed a case with the police station as the complainant. Badiuzzaman has been arrested in that case.”
