Bangladesh seeks united Commonwealth support for safe Rohingya repatriation

Staff Reporter

Bangladesh has sought the united and effective support of Commonwealth member states to ensure the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Myanmar's displaced Rohingya population to their homeland.

At the same time, Bangladesh's acting foreign minister Humayun Kabir called on the bloc's countries to strengthen collective action on peace and international security, global climate resilience, the responsible use of emerging technology, and crises such as energy and food security.

A foreign ministry release on Tuesday said he made the call while speaking at a special retreat session of the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM), held at the American University of Antigua (AUA) in St John's, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda.

The acting foreign minister noted that in today's complex and changing global reality, Commonwealth countries need to adopt timely action plans to keep peace and order strong and to prevent environmental disaster.

He particularly stressed the real implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund to overcome losses caused by climate change.

Alongside that, he proposed an effective and coordinated institutional framework to increase mutual investment flows in order to strengthen economic bridges among member states.

On resolving the Rohingya crisis, Humayun Kabir reiterated that the joint political support of Commonwealth member states, alongside the international community, is essential to complete a safe, voluntary and rights-based repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar.

The acting foreign minister is currently in Antigua and Barbuda to lead Bangladesh's high-level delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), being held there from November 1 to 4.
