Staff Reporter

Mirza Faysal Amin, winner of the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, and Eliza Zaman, elected from reserved women’s seat-23, have been sworn in as members of parliament. Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafizuddin Ahmad administered the oath to them at the parliament building at noon on Tuesday (3 November).

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman was present at the oath-taking ceremony.

In the Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar-Ruhia-Bhulli) by-election, BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Faysal Amin won with 227,917 votes under the paddy sheaf symbol. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delawar Hossain, received 96,513 votes, giving Amin a winning margin of 131,404 votes.

Eliza Zaman, meanwhile, was elected unopposed in the by-election to reserved women’s seat-23 of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, as she had no rival. After the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers ended, the Election Commission formally declared her elected on Monday and issued a gazette to that effect.

The by-election was held for the seat that fell vacant after BNP reserved women’s seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti resigned on 1 October.
