Students of the International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) have blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway and the railway after one of the university's students was killed in a road accident at Sitakunda in Chattogram.

On Tuesday (3 November) at noon, the students blocked the road and railway in front of the university's main gate in the Kumira area. The blockade stopped traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway, and severe congestion also built up on the Chattogram-bound lane.

Local people said the students also blocked the railway line at the same spot by placing trees across the tracks, and that traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane remained completely halted while the road blockade continued.

The student killed was Maisha Mushfirat, a student of the university's English department. The accident happened at around 9:30am on Tuesday on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway opposite the university's main gate.

The university's proctor, Professor Mostafa Munir Chowdhury, said Maisha was waiting with a classmate opposite the university gate to board a local bus when a lorry hit a route-8 minibus from behind, overturning it, and Maisha was crushed underneath.

The proctor said the two injured students were taken to hospital, where doctors declared Maisha dead. The other injured student received primary treatment at a private hospital.
