Academic activities at the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) are returning to normal after a one-day total shutdown. With the students' protest and class-boycott programme over, students are returning to classes from Tuesday (3 November).

On Monday, students observed a one-day total academic shutdown in protest against Professor Dr Kazi Delowar Hossain being given routine charge in the vice-chancellor's absence. Classes, examinations and administrative work under the routine charge remained suspended that day.

On 1 November, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam went to Dhaka for a UGC meeting, and Professor Dr Kazi Delowar Hossain was given routine charge. In protest, students demonstrated on Sunday and announced the shutdown that night.

After the day-long programme, student representative Minhaz Uddin said that, considering the overall situation, students would return to their classes from 3 November.

Prolonged movements and periodic standstills had stalled academic activities at CUET. The university's controller of examinations, Professor Dr Moinul Islam, said about 40 examinations of various departments had been postponed in recent times.

Those concerned hope the students' decision to return will clear the way to quickly reschedule the postponed examinations and make up for the academic loss.

Earlier, on 21 September, CUET's former vice-chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem was removed and KUET's Professor Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam was appointed the new vice-chancellor.

In protest against the new appointment, CUET students, teachers, officers and employees had been observing a complete shutdown and non-cooperation programme since 22 September.
