Police Say Keshabpur Double Murder Solved, Two Arrested

District police say they have solved the sensational double murder in the Brahmandanga area of Magurkhali village in Keshabpur upazila of Jashore. Two accused, Jasmine Begum (38) and Mostafa Kamal (45), have been arrested on allegations of direct involvement in the killings. They are residents of the Magurkhali Sardarpara area. Law enforcers also recovered a pair of scissors used in the killings.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Monirampur Circle Imdadul Haque gave the information at a press conference held on Tuesday (3 November) morning in the conference room of the Superintendent of Police's office.
The ASP told the press conference that last Friday at around 5:30pm, the decomposed bodies of two unidentified persons were recovered from the spot where irrigation pump water falls in the paddy field of one Prabhat Biswas in Brahmandanga village under Keshabpur police station. Informed by local villagers, Keshabpur police went to the scene. The two bodies were identified with the help of the PBI.
The dead are Alek Nur Islam, who was physically disabled, and Majeda. After the sensational incident, the victims' daughter Sabina Khatun filed a complaint at Keshabpur police station as the plaintiff.
After the case was filed, a skilled team of Keshabpur police, using modern information technology, intelligence surveillance and objective evidence, arrested Jasmine Begum on Monday on allegations of direct involvement in the killings. Later, based on information given by her and investigation leads, the other accused, Mostafa Kamal, was also arrested.
The ASP further said that according to interrogation and the accused's confessions, on 30 October Jasmine Begum and the victim Majeda went to the field to cut grass. Jasmine had been in an illicit relationship with Mostafa Kamal, whom she already knew, for four to five months. After reaching the field that day, they met Mostafa. At one stage Majeda saw them in a compromising position and called out Jasmine's name. The situation became complicated.
Fearing the incident would become known, Mostafa and Jasmine tactfully took Majeda and Alek beside the fish enclosure, saying they would pick water spinach. On the way, near the Taltala embankment, Mostafa struck Alek Nur Islam under the armpit and on the head with the tool in his hand. At the same time, Jasmine strangled Majeda with her scarf and left her behind banana trees.
ASP Imdadul Haque also said that Alek, being physically disabled and seriously injured by Mostafa's blows, fell into an old irrigation pump pit. He could not get out of it. Meanwhile, seeing that Majeda was still breathing after being strangled, the accused stabbed her repeatedly in the lower abdomen and legs with scissors. They then threw her into the irrigation pump pit to ensure her death.
After Alek died, his body was covered with a gamchha. The scissors used in the killings were washed in the enclosure's water in an attempt to hide evidence.
Legal proceedings in the double murder case are ongoing. The arrested accused have been produced before the court.
