Manchester United are going through a difficult spell. Under pressure after a run of failures, Michael Carrick's Red Devils face in-form Italian club Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night (3 November) at Old Trafford, still searching for a win.

United have not won any of their last nine matches in all competitions. The run includes a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and a 4-1 loss to Como.

Continued failure in European competition has dropped United to 21st place in the league phase. They have collected only three points from three matches, and if they fail to stay among the top 24 teams they will be eliminated from Europe's premier competition.

Roma's situation is almost the opposite. Gian Piero Gasperini's side are still unbeaten in Serie A, with seven wins and three draws in the league this season. They thrashed Udinese 5-2 in their most recent match and have extended their unbeaten run in the league to 17 matches.

In the Champions League, Roma beat Slovan Bratislava in their previous match — their first win in the competition since 2019.

Roma's record at Old Trafford, however, is discouraging. In the previous eight meetings between the two sides, United have won five, Roma two, and one match was drawn. In four visits to Manchester the hosts have won every time, scoring 15 goals — including the famous 7-1 rout of Roma in the second leg of the 2007 Champions League quarter-final.

This time the circumstances are different. United's recent form is a concern, while Roma's attack has become formidable — 21 goals in six matches in all competitions this season. Dutch forward Donyell Malen is in superb touch, with eight goals in 10 Serie A matches this season.

Both camps have absences and doubts. Roma will be without Manu Kone and goalkeeper Mile Svilar, and there is uncertainty over Paulo Dybala's availability. United, meanwhile, will be without forward Benjamin Sesko.
