Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel has died in a tragic accident on the football field. He was seriously injured in a horrific collision with the opposing goalkeeper during a match. His death was confirmed on Tuesday morning (3 November) by Spanish second-division club Tenerife.

De Miguel was 30 years old at the time of his death. His full name was Jesus de Miguel Alameda. The club said he breathed his last at 8 am local time.

The accident happened on Monday night in the match against FC Andorra. The match, played at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, had reached the seventh minute of added time. De Miguel had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute for Tenerife, who had been leading 2-0. The match eventually reached a 2-2 draw.

At one stage of the match, a ball cleared from Tenerife's defence travelled towards midfield. FC Andorra goalkeeper and Equatorial Guinea international Jesus Owono came forward to take control of the ball. At that moment he collided heavily with de Miguel. According to various reports, the goalkeeper's knee struck de Miguel in the chest.

De Miguel collapsed on the pitch immediately after the collision. Realising the severity of the situation, players from both teams quickly called medical staff onto the field. Referee showed goalkeeper Owono a red card. The match was later declared abandoned.

According to Spanish media reports, de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to hospital. He ultimately lost his fight for life while under treatment.

In a condolence message, Tenerife wrote: 'We are broken with pain. Our voices choke, we cannot believe it. We are announcing the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. No words can reduce this suffering, nothing can fill this deep void. Our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and the supporters of Tenerife.'
