Toufik Sheikh (21), who was seriously injured in an attack amid the ongoing workers’ movement in Gazipur demanding a wage increase, has died while under treatment. He died on Tuesday morning at Shin Shin Japan Hospital in Uttara in the capital.

Toufik was a resident of Chhoygharia village in Kochashahar Union of Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha. He lived in the Banglabazar area of Gazipur and worked at the local Laila Garments.

Relatives said Toufik had been living in the Banglabazar area and working at a factory for the past five years.

On Monday, while the workers’ movement was under way in front of Territory Garments of the Noman Group, he tried to film an attack on his mobile phone. At that time, the attackers turned on him and beat him.

Fellow workers rescued the seriously injured Toufik and admitted him to hospital. He died there while under treatment.

Mohammad Belayet Hossain, additional commissioner (crime and operations) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), said he had heard that a worker had died.

Belayet Hossain said outsiders went and put pressure to close a factory. When the authorities did not agree to close the factory, a clash took place between the outsiders and the workers of that factory. A worker who was seriously injured at that time died.

The GMP additional commissioner also said no member of the police was present there at the time of the incident.
