Nearly 60,000 Bangladeshi citizens living in 19 countries have received national identity cards (NIDs). Of them, more than 30,000 expatriates have received smart cards.

The figures come from a report prepared by the NID wing of the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday, November 3.

According to the report, 108,206 people have so far applied for NIDs from the 19 countries. Of them, the applications of 59,317 people have been settled and NIDs issued.

Among them, 30,183 people have received smart cards. The others downloaded PDF copies of their NIDs online. The process of sending their smart cards to the relevant countries is under way.

In addition, 37,692 applications were rejected after investigation. A further 2,132 applications are awaiting investigation.

The EC report was prepared on the basis of applications received up to November 2 from 19 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Japan, the United States, the Maldives, Oman, South Africa, Sweden, Singapore and Bahrain.

The report said expatriate NID activities are most active in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE, London, Manchester and Birmingham in the UK, and New York, Michigan, Washington DC and Los Angeles in the US. The bulk of all applications came from these centres.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has taken the initiative to newly launch NID services in Spain, Germany and Hong Kong.
