The Election Commission (EC) is set to launch National Identity Card (NID) services for expatriate Bangladeshis in three more countries, including Germany. The commission has decided to expand the programme to Germany, Spain and Hong Kong.

Officials of the EC's NID wing shared the information on Tuesday (3 November).

According to the officials, NID services for expatriate Bangladeshis are currently running in 17 countries. Once the programme starts in the three new countries, the official count will rise to 20.

NID services are also available for Bangladeshis living in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Counting those, the service will be available in a total of 22 countries including the three new ones.

As part of the preparations, the EC will send technical teams to Hong Kong and Germany this month. A technical team will travel to Spain in the first week of December.

EC officials said a total of 40 countries have been considered for expanding NID services for expatriates.

The countries were identified using information collected from the Election Commission, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare, the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA), among other bodies.
