Como make Champions League history with nine away goals in 9-1 rout of Lens
Italian club Como made history in the UEFA Champions League, thrashing French side Lens 9-1 on their own ground. Cesc Fabregas's team became the first side in the competition's history to score nine goals in an away match.
Como are playing their debut Champions League season this year, and the Italian club has been in superb form in its first appearance in Europe's top competition. This was their third win in four matches, and the victory lifted them to fourth place in the league-phase standings.
The previous record for goals by an away team in the Champions League belonged to Bayern Munich, who beat Barcelona 8-2 in Lisbon, a neutral venue, in 2020. By margin of victory, it is also jointly the biggest win in the competition's history; Liverpool and Real Madrid had previously beaten Besiktas and Malmo respectively 8-0 at home.
Tasos Douvikas scored a hat-trick in the rout of Lens. He has scored in all four of Como's Champions League matches, and his six goals put him at the top of this season's scoring chart in the competition.
Argentine young talent Nico Paz also scored. But instead of celebrating with his teammates after the goal, he held up a T-shirt bearing the photo of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who died after an on-field collision with an opposing goalkeeper. Paz played in Tenerife's youth team from 2014 to 2016.
Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli scored one goal each for Como.
Eighteen-year-old Papaccioli drew particular attention. The second-half substitute is a member of Como's youth team and has not yet played in Italy's top flight, Serie A, yet he found the net on the Champions League stage.
