A court in Tangail has sentenced a woman, Sabrina Nahar Sinthi (24), to life imprisonment with rigorous labour for killing her 10-year-old stepson, Saif Ahmed. Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman delivered the sentence on Wednesday afternoon (4 November).
Sinthi is the daughter of Md Alauddin of Narayanpur village in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district. Alongside the life sentence, the court fined her Tk 50,000; in default of payment, she will have to serve one more year of non-rigorous imprisonment, the court ordered.
Tangail District Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Shafiqul Islam Ripon, describing the case, said Emon, son of Sarwar Hossain of Paschim Kagmara village in Tangail, married a woman named Liza of Elenga in Kalihati in 2009. A son, Saif Ahmed, was born to them. Emon and Liza later divorced because of marital discord.
The PP said that in 2018 Emon married Sinthi after a romantic relationship. He lived with his second wife Sinthi in a rented flat in the Biswas Betka area of Tangail town, while the child Saif lived with his grandfather.
According to the case account, on the afternoon of 17 January 2020 Emon brought his son Saif to the rented flat. The next day, 18 January, in the evening, while Emon was out, Sinthi, in a planned manner, tied Saif's hands, feet, nose and mouth with an orna (scarf) and strangled him. She then killed him by holding his head under water in a bucket, the case states.
Following the incident, on 19 January 2020 Saif's grandfather Sarwar Hossain filed a case with Tangail Sadar police station against unknown accused. Police later arrested Sinthi as a suspect. At one stage Sinthi confessed to killing Saif and gave a statement in court under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
After the investigation, police submitted the charge sheet to the court on 14 June 2020. At the end of the trial, the court on Wednesday handed down the life sentence and fine.
The judge read out the verdict in the presence of the accused. After the verdict she was taken to Tangail jail. Advocate Shefali Akter appeared as the defence lawyer in the case.
