Four Nilgai Calves Born at Gazipur Safari Park, Herd Rises to 13

Four new calves have been born to the nilgai herd at Gazipur Safari Park. The calves were first seen about a month and a half ago in the deer safari area of the park's Core Safari. However, it has not yet been possible to identify whether the calves are female or male. Considering their safety, the park authority informed the media of the news on Thursday (5 November) at noon.
The calves now roam around different parts of the forest with their mother throughout the day. As soon as she senses the presence of humans, the mother nilgai runs off with the calves to different corners of the forest.
Visiting the Core Safari of Gazipur Safari Park at noon on Tuesday, a nilgai was seen resting cautiously in the shade of a tree. At some distance, the mother nilgai was keeping a watchful eye on the calves from an alert position.
Tarek Rahman, the park's acting officer and assistant conservator of forests, said the four new calves were seen moving with the nilgais in the deer safari area of the Core Safari about a month and a half ago. Special care is being taken of the calves, and one person in charge of the deer safari has been assigned to look after them around the clock.
Tarek Rahman said the calves are now about a month and a half old. Considering their safety, the authority has not tried to go close to identify the calves' sex.
Tarek Rahman also said nilgais rescued from the country's border areas at various times are brought to Gazipur Safari Park. Several calves have been born at the park since then.
Most recently, the park had 11 nilgais, of which two were given to Dulahazra Safari Park in Cox's Bazar. The park currently has 9 nilgais; with the four new calves, the number of nilgais at the park now stands at 13.
