Three Bangladeshi Workers Killed in Mauritius as a Box of Glass Panels Falls on Them While Being Unloaded from a Container

Staff Reporter

Three Bangladeshi workers have been killed in a workplace accident in Mauritius, the island state in the Indian Ocean. A heavy box filled with glass panels fell on them while it was being unloaded from a container, and they died on the spot.

The three deceased Bangladeshis are Mohammad Miraj Hossain (36), Hossain Md Belal (37) and Sikdar Jubayed Islam (25).

The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon on the premises of an establishment on Mosque Road in the Plaine des Papayes area in the north of the country. The Mauritian media outlets 'Le Defi Media' and 'Le Mauricien' reported the news.

According to the 'Le Defi Media' report, workers of the establishment were moving a box filled with glass panels from a container that day. At that time the box fell on them through carelessness, and all three workers were crushed and died on the spot.

According to the 'Le Mauricien' report, based on initial information, the workers were taking out a box containing 41 glass sheets from the container. Each glass sheet measured six feet by eight feet. At that time the heavy box suddenly overturned and fell on them, and none of the three workers trapped under the box with its glass sheets could survive.

On receiving the news, Plaine des Papayes police went to the scene and began an initial investigation. Members of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service later joined the recovery work. The bodies of the three were recovered and sent to the morgue of a local hospital.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident. The actual cause of the accident and the circumstances in which the heavy box of glass fell on the workers are being examined. Alongside that, an investigation is also expected to be carried out at the establishment concerned by the country's labour ministry.

The investigation will examine whether workplace safety rules were properly followed, whether the necessary equipment and procedures were used for lifting and unloading such heavy goods, and whether the workers had proper training and supervision for this work. If any evidence of negligence or violation of safety rules is found, responsibility may also be determined for those concerned.

No information was immediately available about sending the bodies of the deceased back home and handing them over to their families.
