Injured Himalayan griffon vulture rescued in Kurigram's Rajarhat, sent to Rangpur
Local residents have rescued an injured Himalayan griffon vulture in Rajarhat, Kurigram. On Friday evening, 6 November, the vulture was sent to the office of the Rangpur divisional forest officer for necessary treatment and care.
The vulture had been rescued earlier on Thursday afternoon, 5 November, from the Harishwartaluk area of Rajarhat Sadar union in Rajarhat upazila. Curious people gathered at the spot to see the rare species.
After receiving information from local residents, Md Ariful Islam, acting officer of the Rajarhat forest department, went to the spot and rescued the vulture. It was later taken to the Kurigram range office.
Md Ariful Islam said the vulture was rescued after information came through local residents. It has initially been identified as a Himalayan griffon vulture. Some vultures of this species come to Bangladesh from the Himalayan region in the winter season, he said.
Kurigram range officer Md Sadikul Islam said that after observing the vulture's physical condition, it was sent on Friday evening to the Rangpur divisional forest officer's office so that necessary treatment, care and conservation measures could be taken.
According to forest department sources, the Himalayan griffon is a migratory vulture. These vultures generally come to Bangladesh from the Himalayas and surrounding areas in the winter season. After travelling a long distance, some vultures may become weak or tired and take shelter in localities.
