National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has said the BNP government is not implementing the people's verdict of the referendum on implementing the July Charter. He said the government wants to derail the entire reform process.

Nahid Islam made the remarks on Friday at 6:15pm at a views-exchange meeting held at a community centre on Station Road in Joypurhat town. The NCP Joypurhat district unit organised the meeting on 'reviewing organisational progress and formulating plans centred on local elections'.

Nahid Islam said the government is not implementing the people's verdict of the referendum. By forming a constitution amendment committee, the government wants to derail the entire reform process, he said. He also noted that 70 percent of the country's people gave a mandate in the referendum to implement the reforms.

He said, 'We have to take to the field because the aspirations of the mass uprising have not been realised.'

Nahid Islam also commented that there is no opportunity for the Awami League, whose activities are banned, to return to politics in December. He said the government has created an opportunity for the fascist Awami League to do politics over the past eight months. However, there is no opportunity for the Awami League to return in December.

The opposition chief whip said the BNP reached an understanding with the fascist Awami League before the vote. He alleged that through case-trading they saved Awami League people and brought their vote bank to their own side.

Referring to December as the month of victory, Nahid Islam said, 'December is our month of victory. We will be in the field in December to realise our share of river water.'

At the meeting, NCP senior joint member secretary Sarjis Alam said the NCP will field candidates on its own in the local government elections. They are working across the country with that goal, he said.

Among others present at the views-exchange meeting were NCP Joypurhat district committee convener Nurul Islam, senior joint convener Golam Kabir, member secretary Ismail Hossain and leaders and activists of the party at various levels.
