Three senior Trump administration officials resign after midterm rout
Following the Republican Party's heavy defeat in the US Congress midterm elections, senior officials of the Trump administration are resigning one after another. Three officials have already resigned.
US Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump's former personal lawyer, said on Thursday that he has accepted the resignation of Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights.
While in this role, Dhillon was directly involved in the failed effort to collect voter registration lists from nearly 30 states. This effort was carried out at a time when Trump's Republican Party faced a major defeat in the midterm elections held this week.
Several US media outlets have published Dhillon's resignation letter. In the letter, Dhillon said she had submitted her resignation in October and had agreed to remain in her post until the election.
On Friday, Blanche also said that John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general for national security, and Jason Reding Quinones, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, have also resigned.
Quinones was overseeing an investigation into several former intelligence officials whom Trump accused of trying to remove him from power.
During Trump's time in office, the Justice Department has prosecuted many people whom he regarded as his enemies. Several prosecutors lost their jobs because they were unwilling or unable to bring charges.
In a high-profile case filed by the Justice Department, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted in April. The allegation against Comey was that he had threatened Trump's life through an Instagram post featuring a photo of seashells.
