Wife Arrested Over Beating Death of Husband in Chattogram, Confesses Under Section 164

Staff Reporter

A man's wife and five to seven others have been accused of beating him and leaving him beside the Barumati bridge on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in Chandanaish, Chattogram.

The injured man was later rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Hashem, 37.

Police have arrested his wife, Ayesha Akter, 35, in a murder case filed over the incident. She was arrested from her home on the night of the incident itself.

Mahmudul Hasan, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the Anowara circle, confirmed the details to Dhaka Post on Saturday morning (7 November).

According to police and local sources, Hashem was found lying bloodied by the roadside in the Barumati bridge area at around 7am last Thursday. Blood was flowing from his right leg.

He was waving at passing vehicles, pleading to be saved. Some passers-by later rescued him and took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The deceased's family alleges that Hashem had long been in dispute with his wife, and that his wife and her relatives subjected him to physical and mental torture. He was also beaten by other people at their behest.

According to the family, he was beaten last month as well, leaving his head split open. He was beaten again at his in-laws' house on Wednesday night.

Early the next morning, at around 5am, he was taken in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and dumped beside the Barumati bridge.

Family sources said Hashem married Ayesha Akter, a resident of Chagachar in Dohazari municipality of the same upazila and his paternal cousin, about 16 years ago. They have a son and a daughter.

After property was divided among the four brothers, Hashem sold the share he received from his father and moved to his in-laws' house about 10 to 12 years ago.

There he transferred property in his wife's name, built a house and lived there. About four years ago he went to the United Arab Emirates, and returned home about a year ago.

S M Didarul Islam Sikder, officer-in-charge of Chandanaish police station, said the preliminary investigation found evidence of his wife Ayesha Akter's involvement in Hashem's death, and she was arrested in an operation. The incident is under investigation.

ASP Mahmudul Hasan told Dhaka Post by phone that police initially learnt Hashem was beaten by his wife and five to seven others, breaking and crushing his right leg.

He added that Hashem's father filed the murder case as complainant, his wife was arrested on the night of the incident, and she gave a statement under Section 164 in court, admitting her involvement in the killing.

Police operations are continuing to arrest the others involved in the incident.
