A municipal worker named Mansur (58) was allegedly killed with surgical scissors in front of his wife at the Poura Town Hall in Kurigram town, after the first phase of a National Revolution and Solidarity Day programme ended. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at the Town Hall in the College Mor area.

Local people detained the accused, Shahnewaz Sunny (32), and handed him over to police. Sunny is the son of Julhas of the Sardarpara area of the town.

The victim, Mansur, had worked for many years as a wage-based employee of Kurigram municipality. Most recently he was in charge as caretaker of the Poura Town Hall.

According to police and district administration and municipal staff present at the Town Hall, guests and participants left after the first phase of the state programme for National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Shahnewaz Sunny then entered the Town Hall.

Mansur told him the programme had ended and there was no need to enter. An argument broke out between the two.

At the same time, Mansur's wife Mallika (48) arrived at the Town Hall premises carrying lunch for her husband in a tiffin bowl. As Mansur was taking the bowl from his wife, Shahnewaz Sunny allegedly stabbed him in the chest several times with a sharp pair of scissors.

When Mallika tried to stop him, she was also stabbed with the scissors. Hearing their screams, staff inside the Town Hall rushed over. Both were taken to Kurigram General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared Mansur dead.

The seriously injured Mallika has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident. He said the accused young man had been detained and the scissors used in the killing recovered from him. The victim's daughter is preparing to file a case as the plaintiff.

OC Kamal Hossain said it initially appeared to be a sudden incident, not pre-planned. Police are investigating why the young man had scissors with him and why he committed the killing.

According to local people, Sunny seemed somewhat mentally unstable. It is not known why he was already carrying surgical scissors.

District Commissioner Annapurna Debnath and police and municipal officials visited the scene after receiving the news. Despite the killing, the second phase of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day programme was held on Saturday evening at the same Town Hall.
