Hridoy fourth on Wisden's century list, sets Bangladesh's highest individual Test score
Tawhid Hridoy has made a dream start to Test cricket. His unbeaten 242 against the West Indies in the Sylhet Test has earned him a place in a special statistical list published by Wisden Cricket.
On Saturday, the third day of the Sylhet Test, Hridoy brought Bangladesh back into the fight after the side had lost seven wickets for 184 runs. He remained unbeaten on 242 off 359 balls, hitting 22 fours and 11 sixes. Riding on his innings, Bangladesh posted 386 in the first innings and took a lead of 30 runs.
With this innings, Hridoy set the record for the highest individual score in Bangladesh's Test history. He went past Mushfiqur Rahim's unbeaten 219 against Zimbabwe in 2018.
Hridoy became the first Bangladeshi batter to convert his maiden Test century into a double century. No other Bangladeshi batter had previously turned a first Test hundred into a double hundred.
After the epic innings, Wisden Cricket, known as the bible of cricket, highlighted Hridoy's feat in a post on social media. In its list of the highest individual scores in the first five innings of a Test career over the past century, the Bangladeshi batter has been placed fourth.
At the top of the list is India's Karun Nair, who scored 303 against England in 2016. Second is Pakistan's Zaheer Abbas, who made 274 against England in 1971.
Third is the West Indies' Conrad Hunte, who scored 260 against Pakistan in 1958.
The fourth name on the list is Tawhid Hridoy, who made history by remaining unbeaten on 242 against the West Indies in the Sylhet Test.
Such an innings at the very start of a Test career is rare in Bangladesh cricket. By scoring 242 within his first five innings, Hridoy has placed himself among the best starters of the past hundred years.
The Sylhet innings will remain a turning point in Hridoy's career. His name is now written in the record books as the owner of Bangladesh's highest individual Test score.
