Controversial 'forward fumble' call rocks Texas-Missouri showdown as Longhorns rally to 34-20 win

A controversial officiating decision has set college football abuzz. On Saturday (7 November), a call by the officials changed the course of the Texas Longhorns-Missouri Tigers game at Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri. Texas went on to score 21 unanswered points and win 34-20.
The game carried major College Football Playoff implications. Late in the third quarter, Texas trailed 20-13. On 3rd-and-10, quarterback Arch Manning dropped back to pass and lost control of the ball as he was hit. On television it looked as though Manning's arm was clearly moving forward before he lost the ball — in other words, an incomplete forward pass.
But the officials on the field did not see it that way. One SEC sideline official called it an incomplete pass, while another allowed the play to continue. In the end, the crew let the play stand and ruled it a forward fumble.
Under that ruling, Texas receiver Emmett Mosley V recovered the ball 14 yards downfield, giving Texas a first down.
During the review, ABC/ESPN play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore said in astonishment, "Are they saying this is not a forward pass and instead, a fumble?!" Colour commentator Jesse Palmer was also shocked.
Most astonishing of all, the officials reviewed the play and still decided it was a fumble. Three plays later, Texas scored the game-tying touchdown.
Texas never looked back after that, scoring 21 unanswered points to win the game 34-20. But the controversial call left Missouri fans wondering whether they had just witnessed a football game or a creative interpretation of the rulebook.
The college football world erupted immediately after the decision. On social media, many fans called the call "rigged" and accused the SEC of favouring Manning and the Longhorns for "ratings". One X user wrote that he was questioning the integrity of the officiating crew.
Former referee and current rules analyst Terry McAulay said, "This is clearly and obviously an incomplete pass. He loses control after the hand moves forward."
Former Missouri and NFL quarterback Chase Daniel reacted angrily, saying, "This is the most ridiculous call I've ever seen.... you have the rules analyst and Jesse Palmer on the broadcast completely flabbergasted." Former Missouri wide receiver T.J. Moe said, "This call knocked Mizzou out of playoff contention. Absolutely ridiculous. In what world is this not a forward pass?"
OutKick college football reporter Trey Wallace said, "This was called an Arch Manning fumble, and Texas picked up the 3rd down. What the heck is happening at Missouri." On3's David Pollack said, "That was the craziest fumble forward I have ever seen for Texas." Former NFL player Breiden Fehoko wrote, "Real rigging going on Texas/Missouri game."
After the game, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz showed little interest in criticising the officials, suggesting he would be fined if he said what he really thought.
Former NFL quarterback Sean Salisbury told OutKick that officials should answer questions immediately after games, be held accountable for obvious mistakes and stop escalating confrontations with players.
The incident stands as yet another chapter in the officiating debate in college football — one that will only sharpen the questions fans and the media ask about the integrity of the game.
