From four peacocks to 37, rare farm in Thakurgaon draws crowds of visitors
The peacock wins people's hearts with its colourful feathers and graceful dance. In Gareya of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, a rare peacock farm has been built up, and it has now become a unique centre of attraction for the whole area.
The farm, set up on the premises of the Gopalpur Gopinath temple in Gareya, now has a total of 37 peacocks of different species, including white peacocks. Every day, from morning to afternoon, hundreds of visitors come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of these beautiful birds. The whole area has come alive.
Breeding peacocks out of hobby or personal initiative is not something seen very often. The person behind this initiative on the Gopalpur Gopinath temple premises is Pushpashila, the principal of the temple. She first collected just four peacocks (male and female) as a hobby and began rearing them here.
Raised with great care and close attention, those peacocks began laying eggs regularly, and chicks began to hatch from them. Bijoy Kumar Singh, the caretaker employed at the farm, has been looking after the birds with great care.
With a suitable environment and proper rearing, the birds multiplied step by step, and those four peacocks have now grown to 37.
Every day, crowds of people of all ages, including children and teenagers, gather in the farm compound in Gareya. Visitors who come to see the colourful peacocks spread their feathers and dance have praised the initiative. In their words, such a nature-friendly arrangement soothes the mind amid the mechanical routine of life.
Local nature lovers believe that with proper patronage and support from the government or the private sector, this farm could in future become one of the most attractive tourist spots or eco-parks in North Bengal.
