Garment factory workers in the Jorun area of Konabari, Gazipur city, have again started protests demanding a pay hike. The workers began demonstrating at noon on Sunday (November 8).

Police and locals said workers of a Mondol Group garment factory in Jorun had joined work, but came out of the factory around noon and began protesting to demand a pay rise.

They demanded leave for several nearby factories and called on workers there to join them in the movement. The authorities later declared holidays at several factories.

At one point, the workers took out protest processions on various roads.

On receiving the news, police reached the scene and fired tear shells and sound grenades to disperse the workers.

Additional police have been deployed in Konabari, Jorun, Kashimpur and other areas.

Meanwhile, workers of a factory in the Chandra Palli Bidyut area also began protesting to demand a pay hike. The authorities later declared a holiday for that factory for Sunday.

In the Kashimpur area too, workers of several factories protested. The factory authorities later declared holidays to keep the situation normal.

Md Amzad Hossain, superintendent of police of Gazipur Industrial Area-2, said when workers of several factories protested, police dispersed them. To keep the situation normal, several factories declared holidays for today.

He said additional police remain deployed in Konabari, Kashimpur, Jorun and other areas to prevent any untoward incident.
