The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file a case against Swadesh Chandra Samanta, former vice-chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, on allegations that he abused his power to recruit staff, including his own son, through an illegal process.

Santosh Kumar Basu, the university's former registrar (additional charge), is also being named in the case on the same allegations. According to the allegations, he assisted the vice-chancellor in the illegal recruitment.

ACC Deputy Director Aktarul Islam disclosed the decision on Sunday afternoon (October 25).

The ACC says the recruitments were made without approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and to posts beyond those stated in the recruitment notice. Paying salaries and allowances totalling Tk 8,075,131 to those recruited in this way caused a financial loss to the government, the allegations say.

The case allegations further say the two accused, in collusion and abusing their power, influenced members of the selection board and prepared and approved a regent board resolution to appoint the vice-chancellor's own son and others.

The commission has approved filing the case against the accused under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947, together with Sections 409 and 109 of the Penal Code, Deputy Director Aktarul Islam said.
