Tk 500,000 has allegedly been snatched from a Bangladesh Bank official in Kaliakair, Gazipur, as he was returning home after withdrawing the money from a bank. The incident took place at around 2:30pm on Sunday (25 October) near the Bangshai bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

The victim is A. M. M. Touhidur Rashid, who works as an Additional Director of Bangladesh Bank. He has filed a written complaint with Kaliakair Police Station over the incident.

According to police and the victim, on Sunday noon Touhidur Rashid withdrew Tk 500,000 from his father S. M. Harunur Rashid's account at the Kaliakair branch of Sonali Bank. He then set off for home in an autorickshaw, accompanied by his maternal uncle Tasnim Uddin.

As they reached the Bangshai bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, a white private car coming from behind blocked their autorickshaw. A man reached out from the car and snatched the bag of money Touhidur Rashid was carrying. The car then sped away towards Tangail.

After the incident, Touhidur Rashid called the national emergency service 999 to inform the police. The accused, however, fled before police reached the scene. Later, at around 6pm on Sunday, he filed a written complaint at Kaliakair Police Station.

Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station, said police were sent to the scene quickly after the robbery was reported, but the snatchers had fled before they arrived. The victim has filed a complaint, and an operation to arrest those involved is continuing, he said.
