Man posing as a dentist arrested in Gazipur over allegations of confining and raping a woman, sent to court

Police have arrested a man named Azizul Haque alias Joynal (35) in a case filed over allegations that a woman was confined in a room and raped repeatedly in Gazipur Sadar upazila. He allegedly provided treatment under the identity of a dentist at an establishment called 'Ar Rahman Dental Care' in the upazila's Monipur Bazar area.

Police at Joydebpur police station said the arrested Azizul was sent to court on Monday (26 October) afternoon.

According to Joydebpur police, the case statement alleges that the woman was confined and raped from 9 September to 12 September. The accused Azizul had been in hiding since the incident.

According to the case statement, the victim (30) became acquainted with Azizul when she took her paternal aunt for dental treatment. The woman has alleged that Azizul subsequently harassed her with indecent proposals on various occasions.

According to the statement, on the afternoon of 9 September the woman was waiting for an auto-rickshaw in the Hotapara bus stand area. At that time she encountered Azizul and his associate Murad Hossain. Saying there was something urgent to discuss, they called her to Dibanishi Mor in the Noulapara area of Gazipur Sadar upazila.

After she arrived there, Azizul, with his associate's help, confined the woman in a room. The statement says she was then raped repeatedly against her will under threat of being killed.

According to the allegation, the woman was kept confined in that room from the afternoon of 9 September until the afternoon of 12 September. At one point, when the accused went outside, she managed to get out and took shelter at her younger sister's rented home in the Bhabanipur area. She later lodged a complaint at the police station.

Joydebpur police station's officer-in-charge (OC) Al Mamun said Azizul had been in hiding since the rape allegation. Acting on secret information, he was arrested from the Monipur area on Sunday night.

The OC also said Azizul had previously been arrested and served jail time in a case concerning practising as a fake doctor.
