Public interest writ filed in High Court to stop illegal sand extraction from the Padma, seeking probe and action against those responsible

A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking to stop illegal and unplanned sand extraction from the Padma River, protect the river's natural flow and environmental balance, and ensure the safety of important infrastructure including the Padma Bridge.
The public interest writ was filed on Monday (26 October) by Dr Md Golam Rahman Bhuiyan, chairman of the Manabadhikar O Samaj Unnayan Sangstha (Mousus) and a lawyer, on behalf of the organisation.
The writ seeks an investigation into the allegations of illegal sand extraction, action against those responsible, and effective steps to protect the river and the environment.
The writ petition raises concern that illegal and unplanned sand extraction from the Padma River could adversely affect the river's natural formation, the stability of its banks, the environment and biodiversity.
At the same time, the petition also raises concern over the safety of important national infrastructure including the Padma Bridge.
The writ also seeks necessary directions so that the government authorities concerned properly discharge their legal duties.
The Manabadhikar O Samaj Unnayan Sangstha (Mousus) believes an effective role by the authorities concerned is essential to protect natural resources, establish environmental justice and ensure the rule of law.
According to the organisation, through this public interest writ an initiative has been taken to bring before the court the matter of taking lawful and effective steps to protect the Padma River.
