Bangladesh Record First-Ever Win at a FIFA World Cup Event, Beating Fiji 3-1 in the Under-15 Tournament
The Bangladesh team has recorded its first win at the boys' FIFA Under-15 Football World Cup and Festival. In their fifth match of the tournament, the red-and-green side beat Fiji 3-1. Md Bayezid scored two goals and captain Fahim Hasan scored one. It is Bangladesh's first victory in any FIFA-recognised World Cup event.
Bangladesh scored right at the start of the match. Taking a ball played through from midfield, captain Fahim Hasan attacked down the right wing and scored. Bangladesh went 1-0 ahead with their very first attack.
Bangladesh scored again in the fourth minute. Fiji's goalkeeper initially saved a free kick taken from outside the D-box, but Bayezid put the rebound into the net. Within four minutes, Bangladesh were 2-0 ahead.
After conceding two goals, Fiji tried to get back into the match. They had some easy chances but could not convert them into goals. Bangladesh, meanwhile, had two more chances in the 19th and 21st minutes, but both shots hit the bar. Bangladesh went into the break leading by two goals.
After the break, Bangladesh again launched some fine attacks. They could not score from them, however, and instead a Bangladesh defender scored an own goal in the 28th minute. As the goalkeeper came out to clear the ball, it went into the net, making the score 2-1.
Bangladesh scored again in the 36th minute. This time Bayezid took a powerful shot with a ball found outside the D-box, and it went into the net through the Fiji goalkeeper's hands. Bangladesh went 3-1 ahead. With no further goals from either side, coach Akbar Hossain Ridon's charges left the field with a 3-1 victory.
In the competition, Bangladesh have won one of five matches, drawn two and lost two. The team began the tournament with a goalless draw against the European side Wales. On the following day they lost 3-1 to Portugal in their first match and drew 1-1 with Indonesia in the second. On the third day, Bangladesh could not overcome Burundi either, losing 2-0.
