Eliza Zaman's nomination declared valid in reserved women's seat by-election; to be elected unopposed after withdrawal deadline

The returning officer has declared valid the nomination paper of Eliza Zaman, the BNP's sole candidate in the by-election to a reserved women's seat in the Jatiya Sangsad.
On Tuesday (27 October), after scrutiny of nomination papers at the Election Building, Election Commission Joint Secretary and Returning Officer Moin Uddin Khan said Eliza Zaman's nomination had initially been declared valid. He said that on the day after the deadline for withdrawal of candidature ends, she would be declared elected unopposed and a gazette notification would be issued.
The previous member for the seat was the BNP's Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti. She resigned on 1 October after allegations arose of her involvement in an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka. The seat was later declared vacant and the Election Commission announced the by-election schedule.
Eliza Zaman submitted her nomination paper as the BNP candidate on Monday (26 October). On Tuesday, that nomination was declared valid at scrutiny.
Eliza Zaman is a member of the BNP central executive committee and joint convener of Pirojpur district BNP. She is also serving as organising secretary for the Barisal division of the central Mohila Dal.
Under the announced schedule, 1 November is the last day for withdrawal of candidature. The schedule sets 12 November as the voting date.
Under the rules, as the single candidate whose nomination has been found valid, Eliza Zaman will be declared elected unopposed once the withdrawal day ends, the returning officer said.
