Candidates will be able to apply for enrolment as advocates up to a maximum age of 35. The Bangladesh Bar Council has set this maximum age limit.

The Bar Council announced the decision in a public notice issued on Tuesday (27 October).

However, considering students currently studying LLB, it has been decided that the new rule will take effect from 1 January 2030.

Bar Council Secretary Mohammad Kamal Hossain Sikder told the media that a public notice has been issued on enrolment as an advocate, setting the maximum age limit at 35. However, taking current students into consideration, the rule will take effect from 2030.

The public notice said the decision to set a maximum age limit of 35 for candidates seeking enrolment as advocates was taken at a Bar Council meeting on 19 August.

Under the decision, from 1 January 2030 the prescribed age limit will be followed in accepting enrolment applications, verifying candidates' eligibility and related subsequent proceedings.

Until now, enrolment as an advocate required a minimum age of 21, but there was no maximum age limit. Once the new rule takes effect, entry into the legal profession will require meeting a maximum age condition alongside the minimum age.
