A court has sentenced police sub-inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan to death in the widely discussed case over the killing of Raihan Ahmad (34) in Sylhet. In the same case, police constables Md Harun Or Rashid and Titu Chandra Das have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Judge Abdul Majid Munshi of the Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court announced the verdict at around 3:30pm on Thursday, October 29.

The court's public prosecutor (PP), Advocate Mohammad Mominul Islam Momin, confirmed the details of the verdict. He said that, alongside life imprisonment, constables Md Harun Or Rashid and Titu Chandra Das were also fined Tk 1 lakh each.

The court sentenced the remaining three accused to seven years in prison each. They are police SI Md Hasan Uddin, ASI Asheq Elahi and journalist Abdul Al Mamun.

There are six accused in the case in total. At the time the verdict was announced, only assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Asheq Elahi was present in court; the other five accused remain absconding.

In an immediate reaction after the verdict, PP Mohammad Mominul Islam Momin said: "The prosecution is primarily satisfied with this verdict. However, the verdict will be reviewed further and, if necessary, we will go to the higher court."
