The body of Anjana Bhowmik, 56, of India's Assam state, who fell ill on a flight to Kolkata for treatment and died in Dhaka, has returned home after 10 days. On Wednesday afternoon (28 October) the body was handed over to the Indian authorities through the Tamabil land port in Sylhet.

At the Tamabil immigration checkpoint in Gowainghat upazila, Bangladesh immigration authorities handed the body over to India's Border Security Force (BSF) and immigration authorities. Members of the Tamabil immigration police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were present.

According to the sources concerned, Anjana Bhowmik was flying from Agartala to Kolkata for treatment on 18 October. A fault in the aircraft's door forced it to make an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The air ambulance carried crew members, a doctor and a paramedic, and everyone was found safe after the emergency landing.

The ailing Anjana Bhowmik was then taken to Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital in Dhaka, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.

The process of returning her body to India ran into documentation complications. As Anjana Bhowmik and the close relative travelling with her had no passports, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh issued them travel permits. After the necessary formalities were completed, the body was handed over through the Tamabil checkpoint on Wednesday.

Anjana Bhowmik was a resident of the Azera area of Kamrup district in India's Assam state. Her sister Shanta Bhowmik also returned to India with the body.
