After the Battle of Ballots: Newly Elected Thakurgaon-1 MP Mirza Faisal Amin Visits Jamaat Rival's Home with Flowers

THAKURGAON — Setting aside the electoral contest, newly elected Member of Parliament for Thakurgaon-1, Mirza Faisal Amin, has visited the home of his rival candidate to convey a message of courtesy and harmony. On the morning after his victory, the BNP candidate went with a bouquet of flowers to the home of Jamaat-nominated candidate Delwar Hossain.
Mirza Faisal Amin arrived at Delwar Hossain's home on Friday (October 30) morning carrying the bouquet, where Delwar Hossain welcomed him. The two then sat together and talked.
During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged greetings and offered each other sweets. They expressed their resolve to rise above party differences and work together for the development of Thakurgaon and the welfare of its people.
Mirza Faisal Amin called for working together with leaders and activists of all political parties and with ordinary people to build the Thakurgaon of the future. He pledged to build a peaceful, developed and discrimination-free locality.
Jamaat candidate Delwar Hossain, for his part, assured cooperation in Thakurgaon's development activities and pledged to stand beside positive initiatives concerning the area's interests.
In the Thakurgaon-1 by-election held on Thursday (October 29), BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Faisal Amin won by a huge margin of votes. After results from all 185 polling centres of the constituency were announced, he was unofficially declared the winner.
His nearest rival was Delwar Hossain, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate backed by the 11-party alliance.
Before the election, both candidates campaigned for their respective parties, sought voters' support and competed against each other. But local residents believe that the winning candidate's gesture of visiting his rival's home with flowers the day after the results has set an example in the local political arena.
Political competition is a natural part of democracy. However, if mutual cooperation remains among political parties after an election for the sake of local development, law and order and people's welfare, ordinary people will reap its benefits. From this courtesy meeting between the two candidates, the people of Thakurgaon are also hoping for just such a positive political environment.
