Awami League leader Majnu Sarkar arrested from paddy field near Joypurhat border in Gobindaganj case

Hiding in a paddy field did not save Haji Majnu Sarkar (46), general secretary of the Shakharhar Union Awami League in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha, from arrest.
He was arrested late on Thursday night (29 October) in a special operation by the Gaibandha district Detective Branch (DB) police from a border area adjoining Kalai upazila of Joypurhat.
Majnu Sarkar is the son of the late Nasir Sarkar of Ali village in Shakharhar Union. He is the general secretary of the Shakharhar Union Awami League and is known locally as a close associate of former Gaibandha-4 (Gobindaganj) MP Abul Kalam Azad.
Police sources said Majnu Sarkar had been hiding in a paddy field in the border area to evade law enforcement. Acting on a tip-off, a Gaibandha district DB team raided the place and arrested him.
Gaibandha district DB officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Mottalib Sarkar confirmed the arrest on Friday afternoon. He said Majnu Sarkar was arrested while hiding in the paddy field following a tip-off operation.
The OC also said he was taken to the DB office and interrogated after the arrest. There is an allegation of planning sabotage against him, he said.
The process of handing Majnu Sarkar over to Gobindaganj police station after interrogation is under way, he added.
