Irfana breaks 12-year-old swimming record, sets new national records in three events

Irfana Khatun has set national records not in one but in three events. After the 200-metre and 100-metre events, the Bangladesh Army swimmer has now set a new record in the 50-metre breaststroke as well, breaking the record set by Mahfuza Khatun Shila in 2014 and writing her name into a new page of records.
Two new records were set on the third day of competition at the National Swimming Complex in Mirpur. The total number of national records over the three days now stands at 16.
Irfana's time in the 50-metre breaststroke was 34.57 seconds. In 2014, Shila had covered the distance in 34.85 seconds. Twelve years later, Irfana broke her record and set a new benchmark.
Earlier, Irfana broke Romana Akter's record from last year in the 200-metre backstroke with a time of 2 minutes 45.40 seconds. She also broke Romana's 2024 record of 1 minute 18.27 seconds in the 100-metre breaststroke; her new time is 1 minute 17.36 seconds.
The day's second record came in the women's 200-metre freestyle relay. The Army broke the Navy's record of 9 minutes 50.01 seconds from last year with a time of 9 minutes 47.99 seconds. Mukti Khatun, Irfana, Chhumma Khatun and Jui Akter swam for the team.
In the team medal table, the Navy leads with 28 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronze medals. The Army is second with 12 gold, 18 silver and 22 bronze. BKSP is third with two silver and six bronze medals.
